Indeed, this is with good reason, as developers Hog Bay Software have managed that rare balance of providing just enough features to encourage productivity, with an interface which contains extensive options to help you tweak the app to your own taste. Whether the perception matches the sales figures or not, WriteRoom is often thought of as the platform standard on Mac OS X and the application which all others must measure themselves against. If you find yourself struggling to concentrate in today’s ever-connected and distraction filled world, or perhaps you just appreciate the aesthetics of minimalist user interface, then it may be worth considering a minimalist writing application. For me, minimalist writing software has been a revelation and so much so, that I keep an old ‘beater Mac’ loaded up with WriteRoom and some relaxing music, given the job of word processor, in an attempt to draw a line between a computer for working on and a computer for relaxing on. Personally, I am something of a habitual ‘clicker’ and can rarely focus on one window for very long before I find myself checking out Twitter, catching up on emails or reading my RSS reader. New DigsĪlthough Simplenote is still on my devices it's been moved to the cheap seats way in the back.Whether you find minimalist writing applications conducive to your productivity will depend on your particular needs and working methods. I'll revisit the app ocassionally but it may be hard to justify the renewal if I don't use it for nine months. I have another nine months before my account expires. It has been like a rock until this past month. Simplenote is an app and service I have used daily for three years. This may be my last year with Simplenote. That is unacceptable for something I depend on every hour of the work day. Today I had one note duplicated five times. Note content was randomly deleted or duplicated. I also had one incident of note content becoming scrambled since the patches. Both times, it was a weekday morning which is my prime time for creating notes. Since the Simplenote disaster of 2012 (as I am now calling it with great hyperbole) I have experienced two more service outages. ![]() Unfortunately, it only provides search of note titles and not content. In place of the Simplenote web app, I have switched to TextDrop. In fact, with user defined regex searches, Notesy could be a nerds dream. The regex searching could be more useful if I could save regex expressions. ![]() It's a neat trick but not very practical unless I want to find all notes that contain a phone number. As a commenter pointed out to a previous post, Notesy can perform regex matching across note content, but it must be switched into regex mode through the settings. It doesn't handle multiple search terms easily, but it does search across all content and it does it quickly. Notesy also performs search across all note content but it lacks all of the other search options. There's also no indication of the hits in the documents. However, WriteRoom can only search multiple words as a phrase. WriteRoom can search across all note content and the search is very fast. The Simplenote search is still unparalleled. The customizable keyboard row is powerful. Nebulous Notes is where I write things of substance. The only thing I don't like is the enormous margin in landscape. The launch and refresh time beat Simplenote by a large margin. It's faster than Simplenote with a large collection of notes. WriteRoom Dropbox sync is amazingly fast. I'm not being spiteful, I've just changed my values. ![]() Simplenote is now relegated to a folder with my other text editors. I also moved Nebulous Notes onto the homescreen of my iPad. I've replaced Simplenote on my iOS docks. In all fairness to the Simplenote team, they fixed the web interface within 48 hours and the iOS updates were pulled from the AppStore and then updated a week later.Īfter this week, I may not be going back to Simplenote for creating notes or writing in general. ![]() I learned a lot from my push to explore Simplenote alternatives.
